#ChangeTheFight With Cancer

On the morning of October 21, 2014, everything changed. That was the morning that Gary awoke next to his wife of almost 25 years, Maureen, at Ascension Seton hospital in Austin, Texas. After 11 years with breast cancer, she passed in her sleep.

Their children, Taylor, Kyla, and Katelyn were 15, 13, and 11 at the time. Each of them, like Gary, came out of that moment changed. Reflecting on the ways in which they would each honor Maureen’s legacy, while creating their own. In Gary’s case, he deepened his commitment to #ChangetheFight with cancer, both philanthropically and professionally.

Over the course of the next two years from that fateful day, Gary spearheaded a unique collaboration between Walgreens and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, that culminated in a multi-year, multi-million announcement in March 2016, and subsequently the President’s Award from LLS in 2017.A tireless advocate, Gary’s efforts span LLS, Susan G. Komen, and CPRIT (Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, $3B fund over 10 years), which was just renewed by Texas voters in early November 2019.

Gary’s work also extends to a powerful vision first articulated in his talk at TEDxAustinThis “little project,” as he called it then, fundamentally rethinks privacy, security, identity, and data on the Internet. The earliest prototypes will be announced in the oncology space early in 2020. SilverLining Technologies and CLOUD – Consortium for Local Ownership and Use of Data – are a dual-pronged approach to bring this technology to life.
Rather than many of the for-profit only approaches to data, the team has realized that critical components of SilverLining’s intellectual property must be made available via open-source, like HTML for web pages, so that true individual ownership and management of data is possible. That is the function of CLOUD, a non-profit to file for 501(c)(6) status.

By starting their work in the oncology space, Gary and the SilverLining team are honoring the desire to #ChangetheFight with cancer. Efforts this unique need grassroots support, not just larger funding. Their GoFundMe campaign is part of that grassroots effort. That effort has received wide-spread and significant support and is working towards a $100K goal by the end of the year.
With just a few clicks, #ChangeTheFight can reach its goal and move forward this important work going into 2020.
